Joan MacKarell spent her childhood in a North Atlantic Irish landscape of ancient rocks, wild sea and huge skies. Her love of colour comes from her painting and her first training as a printed and woven textile designer. She is a co-owner of the Studio Fusion Gallery in London.
Public collections include: The Gilbert Collection, Somerset House, London, The Worshipful Company of Dyers, London, and the Musee de l'Horlogerie et Email, Geneva. Inspiration comes from study into the myth, allegory and symbolism of a Celtic background. Through an exploration of materials, she pushes the boundaries of her chosen medium - enamel. This work often challenges widely held preconceptions about enamelling -the expectation of glossy, colourful surfaces. In her most recent pieces, she combines unusual talismanic stones with textured and matt finished enamels, resulting in necklaces imbued with a uniquely elemental and spiritual feeling.
